Embedded core designer ARM Ltd. on Wednesday announced a 2-GHz version of its Cortex-A9 microprocessor that may eventually appear in smartphones and smartbooks.
ARM will deliver the core IP itself during the fourth quarter, so any products based on the technology will likely have to wait until the new year.
Although ARM would like the Cortex-A9 MPcore to compete against the Intel Atom, Microsoft said in June that Windows 7 would not run on the ARM architecture. That would mean that companies like FreeScale would have to use the core in Linux-powered "smartbooks,", which the company later enhanced. Since February, however, the smartbook concept has gone quiet.
ARM didn't specifically identify smartbooks as a target market, however, and indicated that the cores combined would consume just half a watt while running at peak output, which would make the core probably more tailored to the smartphone market.
From a technology perspective, the two cores will share 8 Mbytes of cache. The company did not reveal what process technology the Cortex-A9 MPCore would be optimized for, nor how clients would price it versus the Atom or other embedded microarchitectures.
