Chinese authorities are making a cursory effort to crack down on hackers as of late, and have shut down hacker training website Black Hawk Safety Net. According to state-run news organization Xinhua, police in the Hubei Province made three arrests associated with the massive recruiting site and have confiscated numerous assets, including cash, servers, and a Honda Accord. With all eyes on China thanks to the Great Google Scandal of 2010, a move like this may calm fears that China is allowing itself to become a Wild West of cybercriminals. The problem is that Black Hawk already has a contingency plan in place and may be back sooner than later.

Police allege Black Hawk Safety Net is responsible for distributing hacking tools, viruses, and malware for members to use, and say that it is among the largest—if not the largest—of such sites in the country. According to Xinhua, the site has more than 12,000 VIP members plus 170,000 free members, and has collected over 7 million yuan (just over US$1 million at today's conversion rates) in membership fees. When police raided the site, they confiscated nine servers, five computers, and froze some 1.7 million yuan in cash, though the paper reported that this was part of a long-term effort to investigate the site.

The news follows the high-profile Google hack coming out of China, with Google strongly implying that China's own government was in some way behind the attacks. The Chinese government unsurprisingly denies such allegations (despite the fact that those same allegations have been coming from other sources for years), and claims that the whole incident has hurt China's relationship with the US. With such incriminating evidence pointing at Chinese government sources, it's hard to take such indignation seriously, though the government has made efforts since then to take down other cybercriminals not suspected of being on its own payroll.

In addition to this recent takedown, officials raided a counterfeit iPhone workshop in Shenzhen in January. The "students" were not only learning how to create $74 iPhone knockoffs, they were actually cranking out products. According to the Shenzhen Daily, the workshop had people working on things like accessory purchases, assembly, and sales, and there were retailers lining up outside to pick up the counterfeit goods.
Black Hawkのサイトは，捜査後からダウンしている．

As for Black Hawk, its website has been down since the raid, but a backup site is allegedly up somewhere else for paying members. Those who are still running the site (presumably others besides the three who were arrested) sent out a notice to members accusing nonspecific Internet users—strangely not Chinese law enforcement—of besmirching Black Hawk's reputation. "At this time, there are Internet users with evil intentions who have deliberately destroyed Black Hawk's reputation, deceived our members and stole material. We must join forces and attack these Web sites," reads the notice, according to the Associated Press.
